I love progression and keeping track of lap times is the best proof of progression. Some say I’m too obsessed with lap times. The Lightweight twins racing world has been blessed with the MotoAmerica Twins Cup series to help the progression of this class.
On September 6th, 2015, Benjamin Smith set the lap record at NJMP with a 1:28.738 during a CCS weekend. For those that were there, it was mind boggling. 4 years later, on September 8th, 2019, Jackson Blackmon set a new lightweight twins lap record 1:26.382. The follow year on September 12th, Rocco Landers posted a 1:25.975 at the NJMP Thunderbolt course. Nearly 3 seconds faster than Ben Smith’s record posted 5 years earlier. At this point, it seems like a record that cannot be touched.
Well it got touched and torched. The record got smashed. On September 11th, 2021 Cory Ventura, aboard the Veloce Racing Aprilia RS660, shows up to New Jersey Motorsports park for his first race in twins cup and was blazing fast. During race 1, not only did Cory claim victory (which came down to the line by.048 over class champion Kaleb De Keyrel), but he set the new lap record with a 1:25.118.
Ventura’s time puts him in the books but he was not the only rider below Lander’s previous record. Kaleb De Keyrel, Maxwell Toth, Jody Barry, Jackson Blackmon, Anthony Mazziotto and Tommaso Marcon were all below the record. Twins cup just keeps bringing the heat.
Congratulations to Cory Ventura and the Veloce Racing team on the new record.
