SV505 Part 1 – Getting the goods

In October of 1998, Suzuki released the SV400 in Japan. By the time Suzuki was ready to send the SV into the United States it grew by 150cc and turned into the SV650 many racers around the world grew to love. The SV400 stayed in Japan until 2004 when Suzuki retired the model. So what are we doing with one? The answer is… hell if I really know

In the early 2000’s a few of these 400’s were imported into the states. They were race bikes built by Zoran/TWF for the AFM 500 class and they dominated. By 2018, they were all but forgotten and destroyed until one lucky evening when I received an email from Zoran @ TWFRacing.com. One of these motors some how ended up back in his shop.

We don’t have an entire SV400, we don’t even have a quarter of one but what we do have is the most important part. The Crankshaft and connecting rods. While the SV650 has 62.2mm stroke, the 400 only has a 49mm stroke. Mate the sv400 crank with custom connecting and you can use SV650 81mm pistons. This brings the displacement up to 505cc.

What’s the plan?
Build something just slightly different from all the other SVs we get to build daily/weekly/monthly/yearly.

We’re going to build back up the 505cc engine LWTRacer received from Zoran @ TWF and throw it in a nice 2nd generation SV650 chassis with some lightweight and trick parts. I’d like to see the bike ~320lbs and ~70hp. Just good enough to make the other machines in the 500 classes upset and become the real blacksheep of the class.

What do we have so far?
Engine:
SV400 Crank with custom Carrillo H-Beam Connecting rods paired with 81mm Zlock 2 ring pistons
Yoshimura Intake Camshafts + 2nd gen Intake Camshafts for Exhaust
Ported Heads with titanium valve spring retainers

2003 GSXR600 Forks + Attack Triple Clamps
HyperPro Shoclk + Titanium Spring + Titanium Bolts + AL dog bones
JB Magtan Front Rim + SFV 5.0″ Rear Rim
