ASRA : Understanding the 2024 Thunderbike / Outlaw Rules

ASRA has updated its Thunderbike rules to include more machinery in hopes to get some of the MotoAmerica RSD SuperHooligans to come out. Let’s take a look at a few key lines and what bikes fit and what bikes do not. The traditional lightweight machines all are legal; SV650, ER6, RS660, R7/MT07, Hawk 650, and 4cyl 400cc. These two lines below are the main updates.

Maximum claimed OEM horsepower of 125 or less eligible.

Twin cylinder 4 valve, up to 1000cc; machines over 750cc must use OEM
Crank, Rods, Pistons and Camshafts. Cylinder decking allowed.

Let’s look at the claimed horsepower ratings and what bikes (the non-obvious ones) are now legal and what gets the boot. Keep in mind if you are looking to race one of the LEGAL machines below. Your engines MUST REMAIN STOCK.

Production Rules
“Twins machines are based upon production models, sold by manufacturers and their dealers in North America for street use. Proof
of compliance rests with the competitor entering the motorcycle. Single cylinder and 250 GP machines are exempt from production and street use requirements.”

-This section is very important as it removes some of the expensive exotic machines like the Pierobon X60R and NCR Millona.



“A. Frame, cylinder head(s), and engine cases must be from the same production model motorcycle. Single cylinder motorcycles may use any frame and engine.”

-The line above removes any possibility of engine swap machines such as a Ducati 2v 1100S engine in a Ducati Superbike Chassis.

“C. Reducing engine size of machines from stock displacement to meet Outlaw class displacement limits is not allowed.”

-Example: You cannot take a Ducati 1198 and put 749R crank and piston in it.
